Bonjour Bulletin Novembre 2017

Joyeuse Action de Grâce (Happy Thanksgiving),

Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season avec la famille et les amis!

What have we been learning?

6th Grade - We prepared for and took the Numbers 0-20 Quiz  for extra credit students spelled out the numbers. We started learning Days & Months. When we come back from break we will have one more week of French until classes switch for the 2nd trimester, so during our final week students will be using everything they have learned during the trimester to create and present a Skit to the class.

7th Grade - We prepared for and had our first Unit Test on Introductory French which included: Greetings, Numbers 0-30, Days & Months (Written), and Time & Date Expressions. After Thanksgiving break we will be starting a new unit on describing yourself and others.
8th Grade - We prepared for and had our first Unit Test on: La famille (Family), La maison (House), Avoir (to have), and Possessive Adjectives. Students also learned to identify some common furniture in French and created their own Furniture Store Flyers to advertise pieces for different parts of the home. After Thanksgiving break we will be working on describing more people and things using the adjectives beau (beautiful), nouveau (new), and vieux (old). Students will be working on writing their own descriptions of families and homes and explore some French real estate!

Kahoots - To help us review for our end of trimester assessments, students in Grades 6,7,8 used kahoot.com to create their own web based quizzes on class material. Then students had the opportunity to test the class with their quiz!

Bonjour,

French Photo Album - To see all of the photos from this school year of student work in French class follow this link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/81vH9t9VR0rr7duH3

What have we been Learning? -

Why Study a World Language? - This week EMS French students in grades 7 & 8 have been exploring Twenty-five Reasons to Study Foreign Languages and today showed their learning through sharing skits or posters in class, each representing one or more benefits to learning a world language. We made an art gallery of the posters which students had the opportunity to view and students doing skits performed in front of their peers in class today. Bon travail tout le monde!

6th Grade French Special Guest - Today our 6th grade French students were treated to a visit by EMS's own Monsieur Alain Dupont who grew up in Canaan Vermont and Coaticook Quebec. Alain has worked at EMS for 21 years and is someone the students will see a lot in the hallways as he is part of our school's Custodial Staff. Alain greeted the students in French and they learned "Bonjour, Mon nom est..." (Hello, My name is...) to introduce themselves. Alain told us about where he grew up and the school he attended where half of the school day was in French and the other half of the day was in English. He highlighted the importance of taking world language study seriously as it allows you to explore the world, understand other people & cultures, and even can help you get into college and get great jobs! Next week Alain will be visiting the remaining 6th grade classes for this trimester and hopefully will be able to visit the rest of the 6th grade in French this school year. Merci beaucoup Monsieur Dupont!

First Week of French

Salut,

French Photo Album - To see all of the photos from this school year of student work in class follow this link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/81vH9t9VR0rr7duH3

Looks, Sounds, Feels - The first week of French has been very busy, but also fun as we are reconnecting after summer break or meeting for the first time. Our focus in all three grades of French continues to be "What should our best French class look, sound, and feel like?". All French students were asked this question and contributed their ideas about how our French class should be. We drafted all of our thoughts on our classroom window to see what everyone came up with and then edited out repeated terms and terms that weren't clear or didn't make sense.
From this we created a final document which we are using as a guide for our class behavior everyday for the school year. We also have the document in a French Flag large poster display in the classroom so we can see these terms all of the time and refer to them whenever we need to check what we are doing and what we need to work on.
Madame is so proud of her students' work together on this and their commitment to making this year the best possible year in French.

Me Voici Project - Students in Grades 7 & 8 made "Me Voici" (This is Me) Posters which included information about their favorite things, birthday, family, pets, activities, and more. Students had the option to translate as much as they wanted to into French. Students shared their posters aloud with a partner in class.
Soon these will be posted outside of the French classroom in the EMS World Language hallway, so others in the building and visiting the building can learn about our French students and learn some French as well!

Les dictionnaires français - Students in all Grades 6-8 have been working on using French dictionaries. We are working on translating English to French and French to English. 7th & 8th Grade Students completed a French Basics Review which they will use as a reference throughout the school year.

In Search of Guest Speakers for French- If you know anyone with connections to French language and/or culture who you think would be a great guest to visit our French classes please let Madame Lockwood know! (hlockwood@ewsd.org)

Optional French Class Donations- Kleenex, Pencils, French-English Dictionaries (Merci beaucoup en avance mes amis!)
