Bonne Année Bonne Santé!

Bonjour EMS Families,

Bonne Année Bonne Santé! (Good year, Good Health) as the French often say as a greeting welcoming in the new year. Things have certainly been very busy here in French at EMS!

What have we been learning?

6th Grade - Students in trimester 1 showed their learning by writing and performing a skit in French during their last week. Now we are well into trimester 2 with students who started French just after Thanksgiving break. So far we have covered French Greetings, Alphabet, and Colors. The students picked their own French name which they can use in class. Each lesson consists of a lot of repetition and practice in the forms of speaking & writing activities and classroom games to reinforce the material we are working on. Last week students started using Quizlet.com to practice their vocabulary and we played a fun class team game called Quizlet Live. This week we will start working with Numbers 0-20.

7th Grade - We started a new unit called "Un ami et Une amie" about describing yourself and others. Students learned how to describe: where they and others are from, height, hair color, nationality, and personality. We learned how to use singular articles for "A" (un/une) and "The" (le/la/l'). We worked with making adjectives agree in gender with what or who they are describing. Last week students had a quiz on the verb "être" (to be) and how to make sentences negative using (Ne...Pas). Students started writing their "Autobiographie" in French by describing themselves using the skills they have learned thus far. Next we will be having a quiz on Numbers 0-30 and soon will be beginning a new unit learning how to describe our life at school.

8th Grade - We started a new unit called "Au café et au restaurant" about being able to order food and beverages at a café or restaurant. In addition to learning how to identify common food & drink items, students learned how to identify place setting items and made their own place settings labeled in French.

The day before December break, we had a Café day where our classroom was transformed into a French café. Many students brought in food & drinks that we learned the words for and students took turns being the clients ordering at the café and the waiters taking the orders and serving the customers. Merci beaucoup to everyone who brought in something to share, it truly made this day as realistic as possible for the students. They did an incredible job using the French they have learned! Madame Lockwood is really proud of all of them and we can't wait for another special French conversation day again soon!

Last week the students had a quiz on the verb "Aller" (to go) and we started working with the near future tense to be able to say what we plan to do or not to do using the verb aller. Next we will be learning how to express direction using the preposition "à" (in, at, to) and express possession using the preposition "de" (of, from, about). We will learn the verb "prendre" (to take/have) and make our own menus in French to prepare for our restaurant day at the end of the unit.
